Capacity Building & Solution Design To Address Acute and Chronic Child and Infant Malnutrition in Madagascar

Madagascar National Nutrition Organization (ONN) and Ministry of Health

According to the World Bank, stunting affects 40% of children under five in Madagascar—approximately 1.7 million children—making it one of the highest rates globally. Additionally, 7.7% of children in this age group are wasted, increasing the risk of morbidity and mortality.

Tangerine Lab enhanced the capacity of Madagascar’s National Nutrition Organization (ONN) and the Ministry of Health through a three-year initiative funded by the World Bank. This program employed full-cycle, human-centered design methods to address the complex root causes of chronic and acute malnutrition in children.

Our training engaged three multidisciplinary teams, including physicians, nutritionists, psychiatrists, communication specialists, trainers for front-line health workers, and technologists. By the end of our engagement, three national solutions demonstrated promising impacts in their prototypes and were undergoing multi-regional pilots.
